After we ate we did the self guided tour which was cool, like I said a lot different from when I was a kid, but pretty cool to see how milk is made into cheese. But still great place, we had lunch and if you love cheese then try their Mac n Cheese OMG, some of the best I have ever had, and the deep fried cheese curds are amazingly tasty, their grilled cheese is also delicious quick service and friendly staff. We were here on a Monday and it was crazy packed, plenty of parking (think they could pave the whole lot with as much money as they take in from the tourist. On our way to Portland from Lincoln City we decided to stop and take the kids to see how the process and make cheese, wow this place has changed since I was a kid and they used to take us here in field trips in elementary school. Overall, it is definitely worth a stop, but Tillamook could change some things to make the experience better for everyone (and safer for unvaccinated customers). We felt safe because we were fully vaccinated, but it really wasn't particularly Covid compliant. Even if you tried to keep 6 feet from the person in front of you, because the line wrapped around in a serpentine fashion, you were very close to the people beside you in line. As others have mentioned, the people in line tended to get much closer to each other than the recommended 6 feet. They only had one person taking orders and another serving the ice cream which was woefully inadequate. It look well over 30 minutes just to get to where you can order. Having said that, the Tillamook cheese sandwich is fantastic and worth a stop even without the famous Tillamook ice cream.Īlso, while the line for food was reasonable, the line for ice cream was crazy long. Tillamook county was allowing 25% capacity for dining and it would have been nice to allow people ordering food to eat at an inside table out of the weather. I understand with Covid the need to restrict dining, but most people were just getting ice cream. Food was excellent, but you had to eat it outside in the wind and cold. Stopped by for a grilled cheese sandwich and ice cream cones. There is a very large room devoted to sales of their products and cheeses that one would not find in stores.īefore leaving we had their ice cream, and while there were a very large number of options, what we ordered was what one doesn't see often, CUSTARD, and in a number of flavors. How could one go wrong with dark choclate and Oregon cherries? Lots of others in our area were eating mounds of mac and cheese and of course, tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. We had clam chowder and fried oysters.exceedingly tasty and well portioned. For example, when the cheese is cellophane wrapped and on a conveyer belt,( and here the packages are examined by machine for weight and potential inpurities,) the workers look at every package on the belt and if they have suspicions about any one, it is pulled and examined, and if not perfect, taken away but first the cellophane is scissor snipped to insure it isn't put on the belt "down the line." Clearly a good deal of attention is devoted to insuring only perfect products leave the plant.Īdditionally, we had lunch in the large dining space, where after ordering the meal is delivered to one's table. It is a very worker involved process even though machines do a good deal of the work. What was most interesting was the ability to see actual workers using machines to cut large blocks of cheese into portions ready for packaging, and the packaging itself. One walks from exhibit to exhibit that presents the cheese making process. Now, not surprisingly, it is a walk though tour, and while I gather there are guides, many do it on our own.
